David Main, Lodi Chief of Police, to retire April 23
Chief of Police David Main, a Lodi Police Department veteran of 28 years, announced Thursday he is retiring April 23.
Main, who was appointed to the 72-officer department’s highest position in January 2008, said his retirement is earlier than anticipated, but recently became necessary to help his family address an unexpected illness.
“My wife is dealing with a serious health issue and I want to dedicate all of my time taking care of her and our two small children,” Main said.
Main joined the Lodi Police Department in 1982 as an officer and was appointed the City’s 11th chief on April 1, 2008. Over the years he helped establish Lodi’s first Neighborhood Watch, worked on the implementation of a community-oriented policing approach, and helped in the design of the new police station.
The Chief graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy and the Los Angeles Police Department's West Point Leadership Program. Main, who has a master's degree in organizational leadership, is a faculty member at University of Phoenix and San Joaquin Delta College.
“I am very grateful for the opportunities afforded me to grow and develop by providing me with a variety of assignments, tasks, training and educational opportunities,” Main said. “As Chief, it has been a great honor to lead a group of individuals who are so professional and dedicated. The past couple of years have posed financial challenges for the department, and I am proud of how the department responded by making personal sacrifices and working together to ensure the citizens of Lodi continue receiving a high level of service.”
City Manager Blair King said he will appoint an interim chief from the department ranks. King, who is leaving the City on May 7, said he the decision on a permanent chief will be left to his successor.
“The people of Lodi are fortunate to have David serve them for 28 years,” King said. “I'm confident the department’s new leader will be as principled, professional and community-minded as David.” |
