North Mills Avenue between Elm Street and Turner Road will be closed to all but local traffic from Tuesday, May 31, through Tuesday, July 26. The closure will allow the installation of a 36-inch water pipeline that will connect the future water treatment plant to the City of Lodi's water system.
The closure is scheduled during school vacation months to reduce the construction's impact on motorists and pedestrians. Typical work hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Construction will be more disruptive in the second half of the project.
No street parking will be available during this time, and some access to driveways and homes may be interrupted. Constructions crews will provide at least 24 hours' notice to residents and businesses whose access may be temporarily limited.
Those motorists needing local access to North Mills Avenue are asked to drive slowly and cautiously for their safety as well as the safety of construction workers and other pedestrians. Access to streets connecting to Mills Avenue is available from North Loma Drive, one block east of North Mills Avenue.
The Surface Water Treatment Plant is under construction west of Lodi Lake. It is scheduled to begin operating in August 2012 and will provide Lodi with more than a third of its fresh water needs. By using Mokelumne River water, the City will be able to decommission several wells and stop overdrafting the groundwater supply.
